The World Economic Forum 2025 has issued a clear call with its motto, “Cooperation for the Intelligent Age”: In a connected world, collaboration is the key to innovation and prosperity. Yet Donald Trump continues to champion trade barriers and isolationist policies that do more harm than good. Historical examples and the strategies of leading companies show that protectionism is a dead end.
The Pitfalls of Protectionism: Lessons from History
History offers ample evidence of the destructive impact of protectionist policies:
- Hawley-Smoot Tariff Act (1930): This tariff hike triggered international retaliation, crippling global trade and deepening the Great Depression.
- Reagan’s Gas Pipeline Embargo (1980s): Instead of weakening the Soviet Union economically, the embargo accelerated its technological self-sufficiency. Meanwhile, U.S. grain sales to Moscow continued unabated.
- Napoleon’s Continental Blockade (1806–1814): The effort to isolate Britain economically backfired, damaging European economies while Britain expanded its global trade networks.
Trump would do well to abandon trade barriers and endless economic wars, as these not only strain international relations but also undermine America’s economic leadership.
Global Cooperation as a Model for Success
The strategies of the world’s most successful companies—Apple, Tesla, Meta, and Amazon—underscore the importance of global collaboration. Apple’s worldwide supply chains drive efficiency and innovation, Tesla creates jobs through international expansion, and Meta thrives on cross-border networks. Trade barriers threaten these achievements and stifle progress.
Collaboration Over Isolation
The intelligent age demands openness. While protectionism may have short-term appeal, it ultimately leads to stagnation. The U.S. faces a choice: secure its influence and prosperity through collaboration, or risk being left behind by a world that moves forward together.
